A common question for many people contemplating an orthodontic treatment is if they will need to see the doctor again after wearing them. The answer is YES. Orthodontic appointments will be necessary every 4-6 weeks so that the doctor can ensure the orthodontics are pressuring the teeth as intended. During these visits, the doctor will adjust the wires, brackets, and elastic rubbers to create the necessary pressure and tension. The doctor will also use these visits to check on the development of the treatment, and should it prove not enough alone, they may suggest wearing headgear.
Whether orthodontics are painful is also a common concern for many. The answer is NO. Although you may experience some discomfort or sore gums at the beginning of the treatment or when they are re-adjusted, the pain or soreness goes away after a few days. Normal painkillers are used to deal with this soreness or pain if needed.
Some ask whether they can be allergic to orthodontics. The answer is YES. Rarely may some people be allergic to metals, such as nickel. Some may be allergic to latex rubber. These are some of the materials used in orthodontics. The dentist should be alerted if you are allergic to these materials so they can use other alternatives instead. The swelling or irritation to the gums immediately after wearing orthodontics is not an allergic reaction but something that will go away after a few days.
